Syphilis is a common sexually transmitted disease that progresses in four stages. Without treatment (which often involves antibiotics such as penicillin), the disease can be fatal. Transmission of this infection occurs through direct contact with sores on the external genitals, vagina, anus, lips, or in the mouth or rectum. You can help prevent syphilis by using condoms, being faithful, having regular pelvic exams, and abstaining from sex.
