Syphilis is an STD (sexually transmitted disease) that can be transmitted during vaginal, anal, or oral sex, and can also be spread from an infected pregnant woman to her unborn child. Transmission occurs through direct contact with syphilis sores that primarily occur on the external genitals, vagina, or anus. However, many people infected with the disease do not have any symptoms for years. If left untreated (treatment generally involves taking penicillin), syphilis can be fatal.
