Syphilis is a type of sexually transmitted disease that is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It progresses in four different stages and can ultimately be fatal if left untreated. The infection is spread through direct contact with a syphilis sore (on the external genitals, vagina, anus, or lips) during vaginal, anal, and oral sex. However, most infected individuals have no visible sores or rashes. The antibiotic penicillin is the preferred drug used to treat the disease at all stages.
