Syphilis is an STD (sexually transmitted disease) that can be transmitted during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Transmission occurs through direct contact with a syphilis sore, which may occur on the external genitals, vagina, anus, lips, and in the mouth. There are four stages of this disease, with symptoms varying within each of these stages. Penicillin is the preferred drug used to treat the disease at all stages; without proper treatment, syphilis can be fatal.
